Afghanistan vs New Zealand Pre Match Analysis

Let us look at the previous track record of the Kiwis in ICC World Cup events. They have been the runners-up once in the last edition of World Cup (2015 edition), where they met Australia in the final. In the final, New Zealand just got bundled out at 183 and Australia chased the target in 34th while seven wickets in hand. James Faulkner was the man of the match.

It was an unforgettable experience for the Kiwis as they were expecting their first world cup win under the Aggressive captaincy of Brendon McCullum. Besides this final, New Zealand has also been featured in the semi-finals for sixth times in 1975, 1979, 1992, 1999, 2007 and 2011. Their closest encounters were against England in 1979 where they missed out the final berth by just 9 runs, the second instance was against Pakistan in 1992 where they could not win the semi-final even after scoring 262 runs.

Since the World Cup 2015, New Zealand has been adopting an aggressive strategy. They have made considerable changes in their style of play and squad. Still, they could not perform which is needed to be the best at the biggest cricketing event. They played against England and South Africa after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 but lost both series by 3-2 and 2-1 respectively.

Then, The Kiwis took the Sri Lankans in 2016, where New Zealand defeated them comfortably by 3-1. The selection committee of New Zealand cricket team took some serious steps and then New Zealand won two series consecutively against Pakistan and Australia by 2-0 and 2-1 respectively.

In the last champions trophy (2017 edition), they could win only one match against Sri Lanka while they got defeated by Bangladesh and England due to which they could not qualify for the quarterfinals. If we see at the pattern of the performances from the New Zealand Cricket team, it’s been a roller coaster ride for the New Zealand Cricket team. If we look at their recent performances, India has defeated them by 4-1 at their own backyard which is a sign of worry for them to think upon.

On the other hand, Afghanistan Cricket team have given a tough fight to all the teams they have fought against. Their urge to grow and determination to fight can be seen easily. Blue tigers have booked their berth for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 by winning the ICC Cricket World Qualifiers in 2018.

They won the final of the tournament against West Indies by 7 wickets and 56 balls to spare. Afghanistan has played two series against Ireland, they won the first series against Ireland by 2-1 in 2018. While they tied the second series by 2-2 in 2019. Since ICC World Cup 2015, they played two series against Zimbabwe and one of them by 3-2 and 4-1 respectively.

Afghanistan have also played one ODI series against Bangladesh but lost that series against them. Besides this, they could win only one match against Bangladesh in Asia cup while they tied the match against India and lost to Pakistan. If we see at the performances of Afghanistan cricket team, they could have won only against either Zimbabwe or Ireland comfortably. On the other hand, their performance was not up to the mark against the giants of the cricket (India/Pakistan). We can also say that they have got fewer opportunities to explore and discover by playing against higher ranked teams. This factor can hurt them in their world cup campaign as they will face higher ranked teams for the first time at such a prestigious event. Majority of their matches were against the teams (Zimbabwe/Ireland) that have not even qualified for the world cup. That can be a point to ponder for them if they really want to see themselves right up there at the top.

Match Prediction

If we look at the current form of both the teams, New Zealand can easily win against the blue tigers. New Zealand has much better batting and bowling unit than Afghanistan to win this contest. Afghanistan has a chance with their spin attack, if they could control the pivot of New Zealand’s batting attack (Kane Williamson) and then get the wicket of Ross Taylor early then there’s an outside chance that they can upset New Zealand. However, fans of both countries are hoping for an exciting contest and we hope that it will be one.
